For the realization of the huge painting, which did not fit in Picasso’s usual studio, the photographer Dora Maar, with whom he had a relationship and who lived next door – Rue de Savoie – got a studio at 7, rue des Grands-Augustins; Picasso rented it and used its large attic as a studio. The building had a curious history. It was there that Balzac had located the studio of the painter protagonist of his novel The Unknown Masterpiece, which, by the way, Picasso had illustrated in 1927.[21] (It had also been the place chosen by the leftist group Contre-Attaque, led by Georges Bataille, whose lover Dora Maar had once been).

The artist began working directly on the canvas on May 11.[27] The canvas was so large that it barely fit in the studio.[8] For this reason, and given that it was intended to be glued to a wall, Picasso used Ripolín matte vinyl paint, for industrial use. [8] At Picasso’s own request, Dora Maar took a total of seven photographs, each of which shows the canvas at a different stage of its execution.[35][36] Thanks to the photographs, critics have considered that the work was produced in six phases. Valeriano Bozal has observed that during the first three phases a narrative sense of composition predominates, “reinforced by the rectangular shape of the work, by its horizontality.”[37] There are hardly any elements that stand out vertically, and nothing therefore obstructs the horizontal sense of the “reading.”[37] The figure of the bull stretched from right to left.
