Cutie Mark by Rainbow Dash In the episode Call of the Girl, Cherilee explains to her students what Cutie Marks are. She explains to them that they are born without them and that they will eventually discover what makes them special or different from others and at that point they will get them. In the same episode Twilight explains to Apple Bloom that you can’t use magic to make them appear, that she has to discover her special talent and in due time it will appear.

Since many ponies were conceived as toys before becoming characters in the series this conflicts with some elements of the series, since in the show the ponies are born without Cutie Marks and therefore it is hard to name them afterwards.

Because many young ponies are not yet branded, they are derogatorily called “blank flanks” by those who are. A clear example of this is the contempt of Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon towards Applebloom, Sweetie Belle and Scootaloo (the Cutie Mark Crusaders or CMC).

This generation was more successful than the previous one, releasing first Earth ponies from 2003 to 2005 and then releasing Unicorns and Pegasus and having a series of Direct-to-Video movies and animated shorts, but this generation unlike the next had a considered lack of villains, solving friendship problems and having tea parties and exaggerated celebrations.

How old is twilight sparkle

One thing I don’t understand is why Rarity is taking care of Sweetie Bell. I had previously assumed that all the ponies were orphans (except Twilight Sparkle, as we saw her parents in an earlier episode). But then Rarity and Sweetie Bell’s parents show up, and there’s no explanation as to why her sister is raising her.

Everything from “then let’s add some restrictions” is really an *answer* (albeit incomplete), not part of the question. You should edit that part (and maybe add a bit of explanation as to why this is worth knowing) and add it as an answer that someone can build on.

This question seems to fall into a sort of gray area. Technically it is valid, but so would be all questions of the form “What is the de in ?” Unless it is somehow relevant to the plot, of course. Also, is My Little Pony technically a fantasy?

@Tynam: That’s what I thought. I’m not very familiar with these creatures, but are their ages important or are they mere curiosities? I think we should avoid trivia. Also, the second tag seems superfluous.
