The Colors of the Passion. Holy Week of Alcalá del Valle

The successive brotherhoods that are created are choosing new colors that allow to differentiate them or they assume some of those already commented, in many cases they will look for to evoke their entailment with the associations of which they are born.

These are our colors, the colors of our Holy Week, the colors that fill our streets in habits, finery of instruments, drums, skirts of steps, banners… They are the colors with which our Virgins and our Christs are dressed with magnificent embroideries and those of the flowers that adorn them. They are the colors that we carry in our hearts and that remind us of our Holy Week.

Brotherhood Style – Don’t Be Afraid (Official Video)

Blue, white, purple, black, black, red, dark and green are much more than colors every Holy Week in Seville. In palios, uniforms or candles, each color has a special meaning.  On this occasion, we discuss the meaning of each color, something very interesting in a celebration that has its own chromatic identity.

The white candles represent purity. That is why the brotherhoods use two colors in the two processions, one for the Christ’s candles and white for the Virgin’s candles. They are carried, for example, by the Virgin of the Hermandad de la Estrella.

The red color is used by the brotherhoods that have the title of Sacramental and can be used in the section of the sacramental insignia or in the whole procession of Christ. In its beginnings it was considered as a privilege to the Sacramental Brotherhood of the Sagrario, but later it was extended to others. Now, in Seville, it is worn, for example, by the Hermandad de la Bofetá.

Regardless of the material that each brotherhood requests for its religious medals, you can choose one finish or another. The most demanded are usually gold, silver or brass plated. What does it depend on to choose one finish or another? Each brotherhood can choose the same finish so that there is homogeneity in the brotherhood’s religious jewelry.

One of the elements that characterize the brotherhood medals are the cords they carry. They are usually mounted with a silk cord that can be of one or several combined colors. These colors are not put at random, but are those identifying the brotherhood or confraternity. Normally of two colors, there is one that predominates more and every two turns of a color is put the opposite. The length of the cord is usually about 40cm, the double length, with the knot at the top of the medal.
