The role of the domain in web addresses

The Domain Name Service (DNS: “Domain Name Service”) is a fundamental component of the Internet: it associates computer names with IP addresses (and vice versa), allowing www.debian.org to be used instead of 149.20.4.15 or 2001:4f8:1:c::15.

DNS records are organized into zones; each zone coincides with a domain (or subdomain) or a range of IP addresses (since IP addresses are generally provided in consecutive ranges). A primary server has authority over the contents of a zone; secondary servers, usually on other machines, provide regularly updated copies of the primary zone.

The reference name server, Bind, was developed and is maintained by ISC (Internet Software Consortium). It is available in Debian in the bind9 package. Version 9 provides two important changes compared to previous versions. First, the DNS server can now run as an unprivileged user so that a security vulnerability in the server does not provide root permissions to the attacker (as often happened with 8.X versions).

What is buying a domain name on the internet

In theory domain names can work with only one name server, we call this the primary DNS. However, imagine what happens if you go offline and the DNS is disconnected. There are enough examples where a domain needed at least two nameservers assigned in order to be available at any time. This backup requirement has become an accepted Internet standard, which prevents domain names from going offline.

The name server settings for your domain are almost always at the place where you purchased your domain. In other words. If you purchased your domain name from Network Solutions, then you will probably find that you will need to update your nameserver settings there.

Subdomain

Since the Internet is based on IP addresses, not domain names, each Web server requires a Domain Name Server, better known as DNS, to translate domain names into IP addresses. Each domain has a primary and a secondary domain name server.

To register your new domain name on the Internet, simply access the website of an accredited domain registrar. A domain registrar is a company that assigns Internet domains. Registrars allow a person, company or institution, by paying an annual fee, to have an Internet domain. They are generally companies that also provide hosting services for our domains.

We will use the domain search engine on the domain registrar’s website to choose a domain name that will help our visitors to find us on the net and we will select an appropriate domain extension according to the subject, location or objective of our activity. We will check if the domain name is available. If it is already registered we will not be able to use it, so we will have to try again with another domain name or change the chosen domain extension.

Examples of domains

When you want to access a web page on the Internet you need the IP address of the server where it is stored, but, as a rule, the user only knows the domain name. The reason is none other than the difficulty of remembering the numerical series of the type 93.184.216.34 that compose them, which are precisely the ones that form the basis of communication on the Internet. It is for this reason that IP addresses are “translated” into names that we can remember, the so-called domains:
