What happens if my carry-on is too big?

Is your list of clothes, shoes, accessories or cosmetics for your trip endless or, no matter how much you check it, you always see it incomplete? What you have to be clear about is that, if you want to travel with hand luggage on the plane, you can’t take it all, because you must respect the airlines’ regulations. These rules, by the way, seem to be more and more numerous and complicated.

There are airlines where hand luggage allowances vary depending on the class or fare you are traveling in.  For example, Ryanair allows you to bring your cabin bag on the plane as long as you pay the priority boarding fee. On the other hand, Iberia allows Business Plus Largo Radio class passengers to travel with two carry-on bags no larger than 56x42x25 cm.

There are airlines that will allow you to carry one more piece of luggage in addition to your carry-on bag, as well as other items that you carry with you. These items that you can carry in the cabin without having to pay for them can be: a warm garment, a shawl, an umbrella, crutches, a cane or walker, a briefcase, a handbag, a bag, a suitcase, a wallet, a laptop computer and a bag with items purchased in the Duty Free stores at the airport of departure. In addition, if you are traveling with a baby, you can bring a bag with food, drinks and necessary items to change them during the flight.

What happens if my bag is larger than 55 cm?

For security reasons, Ryanair does not carry individual items weighing more than 32 kg or with combined dimensions of more than 81 cm (height), 119 cm (width) and 119 cm (depth). This weight limit does not apply to mobility equipment.

Each passenger may check a total of three large bags up to a maximum of 20kg for a checked baggage fee of €25 each way at the time of initial booking. Checked baggage fees apply per person/per flight and are deducted when booking online.

On domestic and international flights operated by Iberia, a maximum of one free baggage allowance (free baggage allowance) is permitted, which varies depending on the fare contracted. Baggage carried free of charge must weigh a maximum of 23 kg and measure no more than 158cm (height + width + depth).

On Air Europa, the maximum piece of baggage per passenger to be carried on board the aircraft may not exceed 10 kg, both on short and medium-haul routes, as well as on long-haul routes. Carry-on baggage dimensions are 55 cm x 35 cm x 25 cm (or the sum of the three dimensions must not exceed 115 linear cm). In addition, one accessory per passenger is allowed, such as a handbag, laptop computer or tablet.

What happens if my suitcase weighs more than 23 kilos?

Carry-on baggage is anything that can be carried on an airplane without having to be sent to the hold of the plane. That is to say, the items that travel in the cabin with you and that you have to fit under your seat or in the compartments above them.

You can carry the same items in both personal items and carry-on baggage. This baggage is governed by the same rules and makes up your cabin baggage. This way you can carry clothes, shoes, sanitary items, liquids less than 100 ml. Your carry-on baggage must also include your IDs, money, boarding pass, electronic items, medications that you can use during the flight or in the following hours, as well as valuables such as jewelry.

You can carry liquids in your carry-on baggage, but for security reasons they are quite restricted, they must be in containers of less than 100 ml (3.4 oz) and in total must not exceed 1 liter. If you want to know the details click here.

What happens if my suitcase is larger than 158 cm?

All passengers, including minors and infants, are charged a ticket handling fee, which is applied depending on the origin-destination and the selected delivery method or type of ticket issued. Depending on these factors, the fee payable will vary.

If you are traveling with carry-on baggage only, check the boarding gate on the monitors and go directly to the boarding gate after passing through security* where you will need to show your documentation.

Depending on the class of travel, origin and destination, the baggage allowance will vary. In general, the piece allowed on board may not exceed 56cm x 40cm x 25cm. The weight must not exceed 10 kg in Economy class and 14 kg in Business class.
