Tony Jaa was born on February 5, 1976 in Kok Sung in Surin province (Isan, northeastern Thailand). Tony Jaa is a Khmer Surin (an original Khmer Thai) for all of southern and eastern Thailand, including Surin province, were part of the Khmer Empire in which st to the XIVth century.
He claims to have been influenced since his youth by Chinese action movie stars: Bruce Lee, Jet Li and Jackie Chan, although his fighting style in Ong-Bak is true to his Thai roots.

When Tony graduated from high school, Panna suggested that he should continue his studies at the University of Physical Education in Sarakam province. During his time at university, he studied various forms of martial arts, including Taekwondo, Muay Thai, fencing, gymnastics and many other sports. Still, every weekend, Tony managed to find time to travel to Kon Kaen and train with Panna. Finally, Panna admitted that Tony had enormous potential and approached him with an offer to be one of the specialists on his team.
