Contribution is one of the most used terms when we talk about work, pensions and labor rights. And the calculation of the contribution base is essential when it comes to knowing the amount that would correspond to you for a Social Security benefit, such as unemployment, permanent disability or retirement.
The contribution base is the total monthly salary of a worker registered on the payroll (gross, not the net amount received in salary income). Including overtime, prorated overtime payments and paid and unused vacation time, if any.
On this basis, if we are talking about employees under the General Regime, the percentage to be contributed to the Social Security -both by the employee and by the company on behalf of the employee- is established. Your share is deducted from your paycheck, and it is the employer who is responsible for paying the Social Security contributions.
The contribution bases, therefore, include the three items mentioned above. But there are other income or benefits that a worker may sometimes receive and which, however, are not taken into account when calculating the contribution base. These are the following:
How much will my salary decrease with the increase in contributions?
For the employee, this will mean deducting 0.1% of his or her contribution base from his or her salary. For example, for a worker with a minimum contribution base of 1,050 euros per month (12,600 euros per year), the additional contribution will be equivalent to 1.05 euros less in the paycheck (12.6 euros less per year).
What happens if I exceed the contribution base?
The contribution bases are taken into account when calculating pensions. Thus, the higher the bases, the higher the benefit amounts. Thus, in principle, if more contributions are made, the higher the retirement pension will be.
How do I know if they have contributed for me?
How can I know if the company is contributing for me what corresponds to me? By requesting the certificate of your employment record and the report of your Social Security contribution bases. This way, you will be able to check if you have been registered with the Social Security and see how much the company is paying for you.

How is the contribution base calculated?
What is the contribution base? The contribution base is the total monthly salary of an employee registered on the payroll (gross, not net salary income). Including overtime, prorated overtime payments and paid and unused vacation time, if any.
When does the increase in contributions come into effect?
According to the announcement made by the Minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, José Luis Escrivá, the measure will take effect as of next year 2022, relieving the Sustainability Factor implemented in 2013.
Adding the increase in contribution rates that the self-employed will have to face, from 30.3% to 30.6%, the minimum contribution that the group will have to pay in 2022 will be 293.94 euros per month, almost 60 euros more per year than in 2021, or in other words, 4.96 euros more per month.
Self-employed contributions
Your insurance company will determine whether, despite your incapacity for work, you can continue to work or look for work, and to what extent. It will then make a decision on the basis of expert reports or medical documents (e.g. hospital reports, health insurance documents).
A pension for partial incapacity for work amounts to half the amount of a pension for total incapacity for work. It serves as compensation for maintenance. With your remaining working capacity, you should, as far as possible, work (part-time) and earn income in addition to your pension.
Please note: You may be able to work while receiving your pension. But you must notify us in advance. Rentenversicherung will check whether your pension entitlement remains intact or whether the new income influences the pension amount. Since July 1, 2017, there are new regulations on additional income. In this regard, please inquire with your insurance agency.
